Theater De Kattendans

Theater De Kattendans

The Cat Dance in Bergeijk fulfills a community function and is also a theater with a regional function. The building was taken into use in 1993, but was dated and outgrown. That is why a new part was built. To do this, part of the current building had to be demolished. A large, multifunctional hall has been created in this section. In addition, spaces for associations were concentrated here. In total, 325 m2 of space was added. The theater received a completely new entrance and foyer. The existing theater hall also received a makeover. The building became more sustainable, heat pumps were installed and 150 solar panels were placed on the roof. The façade was provided with a metallic cladding that hangs around the building like a robe.

Architectural firm Diederendirrix is responsible for the design. While retaining the characteristic surfaces and lines of De Stijl, Diederendirrix gives the building a new and more spacious look. A number of new volumes are added to the stacked blocks without disturbing the composition. The stucco layer on the façade makes way for a new white skin of undulating steel profiles. It maintains the sculptural appearance. By using different perforations and amplitudes, a subtle shadow play is created. Only when it gets dark outside, the interior lighting reveals the windows behind the perforated facade. The facade cladding is draped over the building like a curtain. Despite the expansion, the building will soon look lighter than before.

The Cat Dance gets a stylish upgrade with respect for history. For the realization of this project, various BIM models were made of the entire building to provide insight into the existing construction in relation to the new construction. Based on these BIM models, all obstacles were made transparent so that the steel construction could then be worked out in Tekla Structures and installed on location. The project is divided into four phases, each phase has a color and it is indicated on the drawings, making assembly easier.
