At the beginning of this year, the extension of the Museum of Glass and Jewelery was completed in Jablonec nad Nisou. The museum is located in the city’s monument zone, and is bordered by U Muzea and Lipanská streets. The new building with a flat roof was added to the Art Nouveau building, which originally belonged to the export company Zimmer & Schmidt.
The shape of the extension is a reflective shape of cut glass crystals, typical of Jablonec jewelery. To achieve this shape, it was necessary to join the reinforced concrete core with a complex steel structure.
The subtle load-bearing structure of the glass facade consists of steel frames made of closed rectangular profiles. The frames of the steel structure are angled according to the course of the facade and are anchored to the fronts of reinforced concrete horizontal structures. The total weight of the steel structure was about 15.2 tons.
