The outdated school building Comenius Lyceum, which was based on a design from the Bossche School in the form of a square with a large outdoor square in the middle, has undergone a complete metamorphosis. Vic Obdam produced and assembled the steel structure for this project. The renovated covered courtyard provides a beautiful light and pleasant environment for the pupils and teachers.

The 110-ton construction consists of indoor renovation steel, a grandstand and a roof of the courtyard with stairs. Steel tree columns have been chosen for the courtyard. The stand-alone steel tree columns consist of construction tubes that branch into several small construction tubes at the top. The branched steel tubes catch the wooden purlins of the roof structure which remain in sight. Together with the stables stairs clad in wood, the covered courtyard gives a warm and open atmosphere where every student enjoys spending time.

The construction provides a completely independent canopy. This makes the use of wind bracing and facade steel superfluous. Together with the new stairs, the courtyard creates a central place that links the different floors and building sides of the Comenius Lyceum.
