EdenParks, part of Smiemans, is building a gigantic glass greenhouse for the famous botanical garden “Flora und Botanischer Garten” in Cologne.
A covered corridor and an orangery are also being realized on this greenhouse, which is also fitted with a steel support construction.
This unique project has a total area of 3,000 m2 in the middle of the botanical garden.

“Flora und Botanische Garten Köln” is one of the most famous botanical gardens in Germany and receives more than 1 million visitors every year. The Botanical Garden has existed since 1863 and covers 11.5 hectares.

As much glass as possible was used in the design by architect Königs, more than 4,500 m 2 insulating glass. Due to the minimal use of steel, this lightweight construction allows as much daylight as possible for the special exotic plants in the greenhouse. In the botanical greenhouse, a tropical climate and a desert climate are simulated.
The three arches together form a U-shape, the highest arch is 18 meters high. To make the most of this height, a walkway will be built, so that visitors can admire the tropical plants from above.
Next to the glass construction is the orangery, which is connected to a covered corridor.

Our team of steel engineers has the complete construction for our client Ferross Staalbouw BV in Oss
detailed to workshop and assembly drawings with the corresponding required detailed calculations.

In a BIM exchange with Smiemans Projecten, the glass construction was coordinated with the steel construction, which of course had to be very precise and required a lot of attention with regard to dimensions and tolerances.
With Ferross, the Tekla model is  shared via model-sharing, to share the various phases with the production via a short line where Ferross used 3D dimensions to expertly put together the various complex, sometimes double, trusses rolled radii.

Completion is now in sight and will take place in mid-2021.
