Project

Project
Commissioned by ProRail, K_Dekker bouw & infra is to rebuild the Alkmaar Noord railway station according to a design by VenhoevenCS. Vic Obdam was chosen to supply the steel construction. The station is in need of renovation because the outdated building and tunnel no longer meet current accessibility requirements for disabled passengers.

The new design includes two lift shafts that both serve as load-bearing parts for the platform canopies. The generous canopies provide shelter for waiting passengers, and accommodate enough solar panels to make the station almost completely energy-neutral.

Challenge
A particular challenge to this project was the method of construction. Given the important infrastructural function of the station and the risks involved in working on a track that is in operation, a train-free period had to be established during which all risky work was done. This meant that the large canopies had to be installed in advance. The aim was to include not only the steel, but also as many structural elements as possible. Subsequently, the assembled canopies had to be lifted into place in one weekend. Because a lot of energy was put into the dimensioning and control of the prefabrication by our own measuring department (Vic Obdam) in combination with the concrete work, all size deviations were checked and tackled in a 3D environment. Partly because of this, the work proceeded calmly and smoothly.

BIM collaboration
During the engineering of the steelwork, the model-sharing possibilities of Tekla were used. This allowed different draftsmen to work on different parts of the project simultaneously. Engineering firm Hexacon, for instance, engineered the support structure for the pre-assembly. This was done in the same model as the main structure. This allowed the draftsmen at Vic Obdam to keep the focus on the construction, without losing time in preparing the steps that had to be taken to erect the canopies in advance.

Communication with the customer took place via Docstream, with frequent exchange of ifc models to coordinate steel, concrete, lifts and structural engineering. Besides the usual communication via mail and meetings, a lot of information was also shared via BCF files. This made it possible to clearly and efficiently identify any clashes between the products of different subcontractors. Besides the steel construction, Vic Obdam was also responsible for the coordination and engineering of the glass around the lifts. This took away some of our client’s worries and many interfaces were solved and prepared with short lines of communication.

Because of the good cooperation and good results, the project team switched one on one to realise another fantastic project and result for Driehuis station.
